Inclusions and WINS

About

Hi my name is Aryaki and I am the WinS and Charities Lead for Surgsoc this year. Here is a
little bit of information about what we are doing:

There is still a large amount of disparity between numbers of female and male surgeons in the UK due to various barriers. RCS England states that the ratio of male to female consultant surgeons in the UK is approximately 8:1. Although in recent years there has been progress towards equality in medicine there is still a lot of work to be done. Women in Surgery (WinS) groups work to empower and inspire women and other minority groups to fulfil their ambitions and tackle the barriers that may hinder them from doing so.

As a student society we highlight inspiring surgeons from minority backgrounds who can share their experiences with aspiring surgeons. We also put out monthly infographics about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion to educate our followers on social media about hot topics, legislation and papers that are relevant to making surgery a more inclusive job!

Another aspect of the job is raising money for charity. Our charity of the year is Theo’s Burns Club. This is a charity established by the Burns Unit at Sheffield Children’s Hospital which provides support for children and their parents following burns injuries. The Burns Club hosts lots of brilliant activities such as an annual Christmas party and special activity camps where children can take part in lots of fun activities like boating, riding, climbing and more. They also plan days out for the children and put on fundraising events such as “Party in the Park” where some of our SurgSoc committee helped out! Most of the activities put on are facilitated by staff working at the Burns Unit on a voluntary basis. We are really looking forward to raising lots of money for this amazing local charity this year through events, socials, revision sessions and more!

Talks

Here are some examples of the talks we have put on so far:

  • “Returning to theatre: How I managed the psychological impact and logistics after
having time out of surgical training” by Miss Nicola Stobbs.
  • “Does one size really fit all- the ergonomics of minimally invasive instruments” by
    Miss Sophie Green.
